I have a friend that has a line on a 330hp mercruiser 454 out of an early 90's boat. I've got a '95 chevy with a non-vortec 454 that I believe was originally rated at 195hp or something embarassing like that. See what I'm thinking here? Further explanation: the two engines had different pistons and cams. The higher horse engine had pistons with higher domes and a cam with higher lifts and longer duration. In my admittedly hazy recollection, you could not feel much of a difference between the engines except near redline. 455 HOs came with D-ports in '70, '71-'72 were round port heads, usually hotter cams, some with aluminum intakes, RA exhaust manifolds, and bigger quadrajets. Anything after 1972 that's labeled at "455HO" doesn't even compare to a stock (pre-72) 455 in terms of performance.

I then checked the casting letter on the block found next to the oil fill tube, which was 396021, and this let me know the engine was a 455. The Olds 455 is a very good engine and really gave this 2 door 80’s Cutlass some get up and go.

Looking at schematics (parts list) for the MERCRUISER 454/502 Gen 6 mags I see all part numbers the same except for pistons & crank. I'm concerned my balancer and flexplate (flywheel) might not work on the GM crate 502, or the 454 for that matter. It would be sweet to use my "old" balancer & belt pulley arrangement.
